My buddy called and said his radiator blew coolant out the cap and now his car sounds like a lawn mower. The coolant in the picture is also almost gold looking.
It’s a 1995 535i. I thought maybe rusty coolant fried the water pump which boiled the coolant and sounds super rattly? Anybody have any ideas? He’s currently pulled off the autobahn somewhere.

Discolored coolant and weird noises...
I would guess water pump shredded itself and the internal’s are now in the coolant. Hopefully none of it ended up in the actual engine. But the weird noises make me think it did.
Did it over heat? Or just happen suddenly?

Would that make the coolant boil through the cap? Ive never blown a head gasket (knock on wood) So idk. The shit looks like pressure overcame the rad cap for sure

Oil + coolant usually looks beige/tan colored so “gold” sounds close to that.
Usually oil+coolant means head gasket.

lawnmower noises make me think that the water pump is only one of a litany of issues now...

He said the temp gauge never moved or said it was overheating which I thought was weird

If it were my guess I would say the headgasket went and possibly the water pump.
do you have the picture to post? goldish coolant normally means it’s got oil in it. which is when we all blame the headgasket.

Finally got it to load.
He said he let it sit for an hour and now he can hear clicking but otherwise it’s running fine which I think seems strange. Idk he might try and drive it back but I think that’s a big risk

If it never overheated and just started making noises I would think the water pump shit the bed.
Like I said above, the noises are the scary part. If he fixes it himself, tell him he should drop the oil pan before he does anything else.
If there are alot of metal shaving in there, just plan for a new engine. Tell him not to drain the oil from the normal drain plug, he should actually take the oil pan off so he can get a good look at what is in there and up into the engine. Also he could take the oil filter off and look in there, if it is possible ripping the oil filter in half it might be a good idea too, just to see if any shavings ended up in there.

If he checks his oil and coolant levels he may be able to get home if they are good.
If he sees that yellow on the oil dipstick he better get it towed and start car shopping.

I went and got him. The coolant reservoir was full nonetheless golden sludge. We added water while it ran and it lowered the level but the sludge just kept bubbling. I told him he better have it towed. The head gasket was replaced right before he bought it apparently and I smell a bad job.
